New Canadian Survey Signals Critical Need for Equitable Support for Students Following Insights into Current Wellbeing of Post-Secondary Students – Canada NewsWire | Team Cansler

TORONTO, October 19, 2022 /CNW/ – The 2022 Canadian Student Wellbeing Study commissioned by studioitya leading online study platform for post-secondary institutions, and run independently by Angus Reid, has been published in full and reveals a critical need for equitable support for students after providing insights into student stress, motivation to get good grades, thoughts about cheating and more by age, household income, location and field of study. This study incorporates year-on-year data from the 2021 survey and aims to provide the higher education sector with an in-depth insight into the feelings, commitments and state of well-being of current students.

The study that surveyed over 1,000 post-secondary students Canadacontains insights such as:

  • 76% of students state that they can reconcile work and studies
  • 40% of students say they have seriously considered dropping out of college, up five percentage points from 2021
  • 54% of students say they have personally witnessed cheating, including 15% who say it happens all the time
  • 77% of students agree that cheating is becoming more common, with the ease of academic dishonesty in an online learning environment being cited as the main cause
  • 61% of students feel connected to their college or university, 17% agree and there are significant differences between academic programs
  • 64% of college students remain at least somewhat optimistic about their job prospects after college/university

On the subject of improving academic performance, the open-ended survey responses include answers such as “Lighter workload, end-of-year papers instead of exams, fewer compulsory courses, more interactive learning instead of just lectures and lower school costs.” remarked another student “Continue to offer all courses remotely. The in-person tuition doesn’t give me any additional benefits, but it does cause significant stress when trying to commute in rush hour traffic.” This year’s survey includes verbatim answers to questions about their institution’s engagement, impact of the pandemic, motivation, stress, fraud and more.

Stress has decreased slightly this year but is still high, but it is reassuring to see that the majority of students feel connected to their university in some way. More than half of the students have personally witnessed cheating, with a larger majority attributing this to the ease of implementation in a remote/virtual environment. Students continue to report that they benefit from the support, confidence and sense of belonging of their peers, but are unwilling to give up their newfound flexibility, with three quarters now working while studying.”

About the 2022 Canadian Student Wellbeing Study

This survey was conducted among 1,014 current post-secondary students in Canada. The sampling frame was balanced to ensure representation and statistical significance of gender and region relative to their overall proportion of Canada’s post-secondary student population. For comparison purposes only, a sample of this size would result in an error rate of +/- 3.1 percentage points in 19 out of 20 cases. The survey was conducted in English and French.
