New Delhi (India), November 14: Several estimates suggest that the increasing prevalence of unhealthy eating habits has triggered an obesity epidemic worldwide. The fondness for junk food and other not-so-healthy options among modern kids is also a growing concern for parents. There are several clever ways to teach them healthy eating habits, and one of them is to get them curious about food. This is exactly what a food quiz can do very effectively. With this in mind, HT School along with Slurrp teamed up with Lupine to host India’s largest food quiz: Lupine Aptivate Achchi Bhook School Foodie Quiz 2022. A unique aspect of this quiz was that parents and children could participate together as a team. The quiz was intended for students in grades 1 to 6 and took place in two rounds: the preliminary rounds and the final. The preliminary rounds, which attracted over 10,000 entries from across the country, were held asynchronously online on October 30th. The final, on the other hand, was conducted via Zoom and presented by three of the country’s outstanding quiz masters, Dr. Navin Jayakumar, Mr. Avinash Mudaliar and Mr. Meghashyam Shirodkar, moderated. The winners from the 160 finalists were announced here.
dr Jayakumar, an ophthalmologist by profession and a passionate quiz master, is a founding member of the Quiz Foundation of India. He has also been the quizmaster for several notable nationwide quizzes, including the Landmark Quiz, the Murugappa Madras Quotient School Quiz, and the Rotary Galaxy Science and Technology Quiz. About the latest Lupine Aptivate Acchi Bhook School Foodie Quiz 2022, said Dr. Jayakumar: “The father of medicine, Hippocrates said: ‘Let food be your medicine and medicine your food’. As a doctor and Indian, I can say that many of our dishes and traditional dishes come from ancient medical knowledge. It was a pleasure to take this quiz with a super enthusiastic group of families. They had their plates full of delicious questions and they sure made a meal out of it!”
Mr. Mudaliar has been the quiz master for the Power of Ideas Print Quiz, Airtel Quiz-o-Mania, Airtel’s techQ and the NTPC Electron Quiz to name a few. He has also hosted quizzes for large corporations and respected institutions. Together, Mr. Mudaliar and Dr. Jayakumar conducted the world’s largest online school quiz, ClassAct 2022, The Hindustan Times Republic Day Quiz in January and Smartacus 2022, The Hindustan Times National Interschool Quiz in August. In his current avatar, Mr. Mudaliar runs HT Labs. In his previous roles, he invented the legendary Saregama Carvaan and co-founded Gaana.
Mr Mudaliar believes that quizzing isn’t about memorizing or memorizing dry facts, it’s a way of life. “For children, quizzes should not be an academic exercise or a knowledge test, but rather a way of increasing their curiosity about everything around them, including food. It aims to teach children to question basic facts. Questions like ‘Why is Barfi called Barfi?’ stimulates them to think and derive. The answer? Because it resembles ice, this is baraf. Lupine Aptivate Achchi Bhook School Foodie Quiz 2022 was designed to encourage such curiosity in kids about food and it did just that. Every child is a seeker and the quiz takes them on a quest for knowledge. What really matters is that the kids enjoy this journey full of fun and knowledge and not just focus on the destination,” he said.
Mr. Shirodkar, popularly known as Megatron in Indian quiz circles, has been a professional hosting quizzes and gamified knowledge content for blue chip companies, IITs-IIMs and NGOs in India for two decades. As an Air Force Cadet in training at the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla, he has conducted prestigious quizzes such as the HDFC Ergo Insurance Awareness Award Junior Quiz (Asia’s largest school quiz), the CBSE Heritage India Quiz and the SEBI Annual All-India Employee Quiz, among others.
Mr. Shirodkar was delighted with the response this online food quiz generated. “Being a foodie myself, this quiz gave me the opportunity to connect with other foodies, young and old. It was really fun and helped me learn some delicious new food facts. When we were kids, our parents and elders taught us that when we eat, we get the most benefit from using as many of our senses as possible to experience it—contemplating the beauty of the dish, and inhaling its aroma, with the Feel it with your fingers and finally taste it with your palate. After taking this quiz, I want to add one more experience to the list – taking food quiz questions! To use an apt metaphor, the Lupine Aptivate Achchi Bhook School Foodie Quiz has whetted my appetite for more food trivia like this, and I hope it comes back soon next year!” he says.
