Notre Dame intends to expand its prison education efforts through NDPEP – South Bend Tribune | Team Cansler

SOUTH BEND — Chris Foggie has been in prison during the COVID-19 lockdown at Westville Correctional Facility. Morale is low, he said, as outside visits and programs have been abruptly halted and movement within the facility restricted.

The only thing that kept him going was his coursework as part of the Moreau College Initiative, a program where instructors from the University of Notre Dame and Holy Cross College teach at the prison near LaPorte.

“It was the only thing that kept us alive. School was our outlet,” said Foggie, who earned his associate’s degree through the program.

The Moreau program has awarded 101 associate’s and 29 bachelor’s degrees since 2013, but now Notre Dame is hoping to extend educational opportunities to even more Indiana inmates through its new prison education programs.
